Holds!

Hey everyone!
Jess heree!  I can’t believe how quickly this semester has been going!  Can you believe its already halfway done?  But as the semester gets closer to the end…that means only one thing..time to sign up for classes for the next semester!!  As many of you guys should know, over the summer we constantly reminded you on how to take care of your holds on your isis account now and not later so you don’t have to get stressed out when you have to register for classes.  These holds can be for immunization hold, maybe you have that ethnicity survey , or many of you guys now might have an advising hold.  Take care of these holds ASAP!  Advising starts November 3rd so make sure you sign up for an appointment to meet with you advisor.  Believe me, you do NOT want these holds to take away from your perfect schedule that you create for the spring semester

Hope this helps!

ROOOMMMMM MATES!!!

HEY everyone!!!!

Hope everyone’s first month here has been awesome!!!! How’s everyone’s first month of commuting or living here?? If your living here or have ever had a room mate. What’s your experience been like? Have you had any room mate issues. Now’s the time to vent. I remember my freshmen year I didn’t have the best of room mates. We had BAD communication skills. One of my room mates was smelly!! Another worked a lot (which wasn’t bad except she would do bad things with my smelly room mate. The other one was very nice just was way to open to her life.

Top Tips to being an AMAZING room mate

1. Do your LAUNDRY!!
2. Take a SHOWER every so often
3. Try and keep your stuff on YOUR side of your room
4. Don’t STEAL your room mates stuff (unless they say you can use it or have it)
5. Be CONSIDERATE of sleeping time

So try these tips. Have any more comment 🙂

Who Wants to SEE THE WORLD!

Let me start off by asking you a question. What is the farthest you have ever travelled from home? It doesn’t matter if it was family or alone, just in general. If you haven’t left the country then you are MISSING OUT! The world is a huge place and I don’t know about you guys, but I could not die happy knowing that I had only seen 1/100000000th of it (that may be a bit of an exaggeration but you get the idea). If you, like me want to travel and experience the world then NOW is the time. Study abroad while you still have the opportunity because unless you have a very high paying job or a job that has you travel, you’re probably going to be sticking close to home for the first many years of your career!
Studying abroad not only gives you the taste of another culture, but it can gets you credit as well. Can you imagine getting credit for going to pretty much the same classes but in SPAIN, ITALY, or even BRAZIL! If this interests you then Click Here! Deciding to study abroad is a decision you will not regret! I’m looking into it now and I could not be more excited! I hope you all at least look into it. Good luck with the rest of the semester and have a great 3 DAY WEEKEND! 😀 But remember, Tuesday is Monday‘s schedule!

Shuttle systemmmmm!

Hey Everyone!!!
Has everyone been feeling so moody because of this terrible weather we’ve been having lately?  This rain and cold weather is just AWFUL!!  It came by so fast I didn’t even have time to pack all my summer clothes away let alone take out my winter clothing!  But yes, its time to prepare for the cold season up ahead.  Make sure you plan plenty of time to bring up your winter clothing before it gets too cold!  Bring bulkier comforters, plenty of blankets, more sweatshirts, etc.  Also make sure you bring home all your tanktops adn shorts…you don’t want to clutter your room wtih clothing you won’t be wearing!  If you find that you have to take a trip to walmart or something becasue you need to buy more winter clothing, or rainboots or something and you don’t have a way to get there, you can use the Drumhill shuttle system that we have here on the weekends!

the times for the drumhill service are as such:
Departs Drum Hill on the hour, starting at 12:00 p.m. and ending at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
if you have any questions or you want to let transportation services know you wanna get there call 978.934.2222! and they will be more than happy to help.

everyone enjoy the long weekend and make sure you stay warm!!

Don’t Worry!

I’ve noticed recently that the gloomy weather has spurred on a lot of different reactions from people these days. Either everyone is suffering from a severe case of cabin fever or they just seem to be all around down and out. One day I decided to research if the weather had anything to do with the sudden change in behavior.

Did you know that there is something called Seasonal Affective Disorder? It also goes under the name of “winter depression” and “winter blues.’ Poets have described a sudden sense of sadness, loss and lethargy with the coming of winter for centuries.
I know the winter is cold
It brings out your fears
All throughout the years
I know the winter is cold
It makes you think
Of all the things you miss
I know the winter is cold
It’s dead and lonely
Suddenly nice are the phoney
I know the winter is cold
Because I’ve been afraid and alone
And I can’t break free
Of the everlasting winter entrapping me

Courtney Beaudry
The typical symptoms of SAD include depression, lack of energy, increased need for sleep, a craving for sweets and weight gain. Symptoms begin in the fall, peak in the winter and usually resolve in the spring.

This disorder can sometimes affect up to 10 million Americans while a larger number might suffer from the general winter blues.

So if you’re feeling tired, don’t want to go to class, and you’ve suddenly gained that freshman 15…here are a few tips to beat it.

  • Light can help! There has been a study showing improvement in SAD symptoms when individuals took a one-hour daily walk outside. It’s best to do this in the early hours of the morning, but if you can’t then make time out in your day.
  • Daily exercise
  • And if all else fails and you’re starting to feel like you need someone to talk to, please contact the Counseling Center. You can call them at 978-934-4331 or stop by their offices to make an appointment. McGauvran Student Center, Room 363, UML South, 71 Wilder Street, Lowell, MA 01854-3092
SAD is a very serious disorder. If you’re worried that you might have it, then please do yourself a favor and talk to someone. Sitting in your room and hoping it’s going to go away isn’t a good cure. It could hurt more than help. Try surrounding yourself with light and just remember that there are people out there who want to help.
SAD can also affect you in the summer. So if you suddenly start feeling anxious, irritable, have trouble sleeping, and start losing weight this could all be an affect of Summer Seasonal Depression.

Just keep remembering the words of Bobby Mcferrin: “Don’t worry, be happy!”

Pop Punk and Halloween

Shannon here, official Halloween correspondent! I’m here to inform you about a great event related to HALLOWEEN happening October 30.

As previously mentioned, I have many favorite things in life including Halloween, Hello Kitty, and POP PUNK. That being said, on October 30 from 7-8:30pm bands Life on Hold and Beneath the Sheets will be playing at Nightmare New England / Spooky World in Litchfield, NH.

Both of these bands are fantastic, from Lowell and comprised of both past and present UMass Lowell students. If you aren’t doing anything Saturday October 30 you should definitely consider coming out and supporting these bands and take a look around Spooky World while you’re at it!

The show has an event page on Facebook, you can check it out HERE and RSVP!

Cheers!

In Honor of

Well, hello there all. It’s Ashley, again. There has been a TON of stuff going on in the media and in our country about bullying, anti-gay bullying, intolerance, suicide, and just overall hate. I keep feeling the need to spread the word, spread awareness, and give more information overall about this hate epidemic that seems to be consuming the news, our thoughts, and even our campus.
In the past two months, all of these students have taken their own life because of bullying and anti-gay intolerance
Asher Brown, age 13.
“Brown, his family said, was “bullied to death” — picked on for his small size, his religion and because he did not wear designer clothes and shoes. Kids also accused him of being gay, some of them performing mock gay acts on him in his physical education class, his mother and stepfather said.” – The Houston Chronicle
Seth Walsh, age 13.
“He was a very loving boy, very kind. He had a beautiful smile. He liked fashion, his friends, talking on the phone. He was artistic and very bright.” Judy Walsh hopes her son’s death is a wake up call to the community to “develop more tolerance for different people.”– NEW YORK (CBS)
Billy Lucas, age 15.
“This is the first time that Greensburg High School administrators can remember a student taking their own life. But it’s not going unnoticed – school administrators met Monday to discuss forming a committee that would include students and parents to help battle the bullying issues.” – WorldNow and WTHR
Tyler Clementi, age 18.
“Mr. Clementi’s family issued a statement on Wednesday confirming the suicide and pledging cooperation with the criminal investigation. “Tyler was a fine young man, and a distinguished musician,” the statement read. “The family is heartbroken beyond words.” – The New York Times
Raymond Chase, age 18.
“Today I contact you with the deeply sad news of the passing of Raymond Chase, sophomore, 19, culinary arts major. The campus community is mourning the loss of this vibrant young man who leaves many JWU friends and teachers, and a loving family of Monticello, New York.” -TheNewsofToday.com
Another very famous case of hate was the murder of Matthew Shepard, age 21. The two men robbed, pistol-whipped, tortured him, and tied him to a fence in a remote, rural area, leaving him to die.
The epidemic of hate crimes and intolerance has been extremely evident in the media. Many different celebrities and organizations have taken huge steps to prevent terrible tragedies such as these from happening again.
A ton of celebrities have made you tube videos for The Trevor Projects sharing the  simple, yet extremely powerful, message of “It Gets Better.”
You can watch some of these powerful messages on http://www.thetrevorproject.org/ or http://www.youtube.com/user/itgetsbetterproject
The Love Is Louder movement is also another project started by actress Brittany Snow and MTV. “Love Is Louder is a movement that is hopefully going to bring some awareness and make some noise when it comes to teens who are feeling suicidal or even just sad, outcasts, and being bullied, and really feel like they have nowhere to turn to,” Snow explained. “It’s a place where people who have been through it can support them and share their stories, [so they will know] that they’re not alone, and that there’s a place for people to put their experiences and hope.”-MTV, visit their website at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Love-is-Louder/160446023982554?ref=ts.

There are a ton of different ways that people are trying to combat all of the hate against different groups of people.
There are a bunch of different events and things on campus that YOU can get involved with and/or support.

You can also support the OBP, Pride Alliance, and UML Gender Studies by attending
Well, that’s a lot to digest and think of. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please leave feedback.

Sending love,
Ashley
