Procrastination!

As you may or may not have noticed it is November 9 2010 which means we have about 20 class days left to the semester! Frightening? Yes. Exciting? Yes!

What does this mean for you? It means that finals are a mere 20 class days away and now is the time to start preparing yourself at least mentally for what’s to come…one thing you should never do (but the even the best of us do it) is PROCRASTINATE!!!!

I know it’s really easy to get caught up in all the fun things college has to offer: no curfew and good friends to name a few, but at some point you need to take a break from it and work on some…work. That being said, don’t put your cellphones down just yet (and know you probably haven’t), but just schedule your time wisely.

How do you do it? Section out a large chunk of time to do your homework everyday and even work ahead on homework if you’re feeling saucy. Or if you can’t focus in your room, go to the library and work there (personally, I work better in the library because I am easily distracted). Just make sure you don’t procrastinate! Because in the end you’ll be thankful you didn’t when you are hanging out with your friends!

WOAH! It’s almost OVER?!

Hey there!!!

So in case you haven’t noticed THIS SEMESTER FLEW BY!!! Every semester does, but it can seem really overwhelming once you notice there are finals, packing, holidays, and a TON of other stuff going on!

Here are some tips to stay calm, cool, and collected!

1. Start preparing for your finals!!! Figure out your final schedule! Find out what you need to do for each class, whether it’s a final project or a final exam. If you have final papers or projects due, get a head start so your not cramming in and studying for exams after that. Start making study guides and study groups for your exams so you’re ready!

2. If you have to start packing for winter break, pack in small bunches and take trips home if you can. It’s easier to start with the clothes and things that you won’t need or use until then so by the day you need to move back home, you’re just taking your essentials with you.

3. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Hanukkah are all fast approaching! If you plan on buying gifts or need some extra dough, start saving up now so you’re not struggling or worried by the holidays.

Well, let us know if you feel overwhelmed and we’ll help as best we can!!

updates for november!

Hey Guys!
Just a reminder for everyone, next Thursday is Veterans Day!  A time to remember all of our soldiers who are at the war right now, who fought hard for us, who were killed in battle, or are injured, or are coming home safe.  Because of this day, the university will be closed which means there will be no classes.  So on wednesday, it will be a THURSDAY class schedule.  Make sure you mark this in your calenders!  All of your professors might be reminding you but its always good to have another reminder.

Also, another thing to remember, daylight savings time is this sunday the 6th!  We all get to sleep an extra hour!  Make sure you set your clocks before you go to bed though or you might end up showing up to work an hour early!

That is it for now!
next blog I will be talking about the best holiday of the year…TURKEY DAY!

Registration/ISIS

Hello there friends,
As most of you hopefully know, registration for spring semester is fast approaching! If you have not thought about this yet, you should definitely start! Here are some helpful hints to keep your registration frustrations to a minimum.
Helpful Registration Hints::
1. Meet with your advisor.
It’s pretty important to start with this step first. It might be a hassle to try to find time or do so, but it’s the first step in the right direction. A lot of times there is an ‘Advisor Hold’ on your account anyways. If you do not meet with your advisor you may not even be able to register for classes.
2. Check out your ‘Advisement Report’!!
This is a HUGE life saver. This new function on ISIS plots out what classes you have taken and what you NEED to take. It’s so easy to be able to understand your requirements! If you check this on ISIS and print out a copy you can easily keep track of your academics! To view this follow these steps:
      >> Log into ISIS
      >> Click on Student Center
      >> Click on Quick Links
      >> Click the button that looks like (>>) that
      >> Boom! There’s your advisement report!!
3. Check out the Centers for Learning!
If you’re still having a tough time trying to decide on what classes you should take or any questions in general, the Centers for Learning is the place for you!
      >> Head to http://www.uml.edu/class/
      >> You can always contact them by::
                Phone: 978-934-2946
                Fax: 978-934-3088
                E-mail: Sheila_RileyCallahan@uml.edu
UMass Lowell South:  O’Leary Library, 3rd floor
UMass Lowell North:  Southwick Hall, 308
Good luck all!!!

I hope you remember how to register for classes from orientation! If not never fear here are some tips on advising and registering for classes

1. Don’t wait till the last minute to meet with your adviser
2. Be prepared when meeting with your adviser, have an idea on what you have to take or what you are going to take next semester.

3.After meeting with your adviser start making your schedule and find out when you are eligible to sign up for classes (You don’t wanna be stuck with a class you don’t want)

4. Make sure you know how to search and find classes. If not ask around: room mate, RA, or us your ORIENTATION leaders

And then you take the COS… of the TAN…and…..divide… ZZZZZZZ…

Hello everyone!!!!
I have noticed in a few of my classes lately that the students around me have started to fall asleep in class….  And if this is happening to the upperclassmen, I’m sure it is happening to the freshman as well.  So I am here to help!  We are now officially past the half-way point of our fall semester (I know.. it went by fast right?)  and that means that teachers are starting to have more tests and more quizzes and more homework in order to prepare you for your finals. What does that mean?  That means many many many many many did I mention many? I’ll say it one more time just in case: MANY nights that you might not get a lot of sleep.
Now I’m sure you’re all thinking:  “James, how can I avoid these sleepless nights? I love sleep.  Like I LOVE it.”….I might be paraphrasing a bit here, but I’m SURE that’s around what you were all thinking.
The answer is quite simple actually: Time management.  I found that my freshman year I had to get creative with my study time and my homework time.  I started watching less T.V. and played a little less N64 (I’m old school)  and I started to get more of my homework/studying done before 10pm.  You need to start earlier than late at night to start your homework.  I know after a long day of classes you want to do nothing than take a nap or veg until 11 at night, but if you start your homework earlier, you will be able to veg out all you want afterward.  Basically what I’m trying to say here is that homework and studying needs to become a priority.  If you do that, then you will find yourself with actual FREE TIME and you can go out and have fun and not have to think about that project you have to do in the back of your mind.  You can also brag to all your friends who are complaining about all the work they have to do and just simply say “Well mine is all done”.  See? Doing your homework gives you not only better grades, but bragging rights.
Now if you do all of these things and you still find yourself nodding off in class, here is what you do.  Get up, go outside of the class and head to the nearest bubbler.  Splash some water on your face, stretch a bit and just walk back into the class room (in a non disruptive way of course).  Everyone gets tired and drained during a class eventually.  Professors won’t mind if you step out for just a second if it is a once in a moon kind of thing, but don’t make a habit out of it.  Your Professor would be more upset (and usually insulted) if you are sleeping in their class, so do the polite thing and just take a step outside and re-awaken yourself!
Also, Coffee and Energy drinks are good for those who use them and hey, if it works for you it works for you… but they both are bad for your health if used in large quantities.  The best answer for being tired is getting a good nights sleep, so make sure that you are doing that in your own bed instead of the class room!
Happy trails to you, until we meet again!
