Fall Has Arrived! (Okay, almost!)
Hey there!
Tomorrow is the first day of Fall which is by far my favorite season. Let’s be honest, the weather is much nicer, the foliage is gorgeous, and there is so much to do! I am here to inform you of such things to do whether it be in Lowell or the surrounding cities and states.
Apple Picking and apple pie making! Apple picking is my absolute favorite thing to do in the fall. I can very easily eat 3 apples in the process of apple picking. Luckily there are a bunch of apple orchards in the area so you can go out with a bunch of friends and make a day out of it!
Pumpkin related items! Pumpkins go hand in hand with apples. Most of the time you can find pumpkins at apple orchards or even grocery stores. Another awesome thing is that you can find a lot of pumpkin carving stencils online for free or little money. Remember to keep the seeds so you can roast them!
Close by orchards include Mack’s Apples in Londonderry, NH, Parlee Farms in Tyngsboro, MA, and Mann Orchards in Methuen, MA.
Salem Witches! Okay, I lied when I said that apple picking was my favorite thing to do in the fall, the Salem witches are by far my favorite. Grab a couple friends some Sunday and head down to Salem, MA. My favorite attractions? The witch museum, the pirate museum, and the House of the Seven Gables. Other favorite? Ruth’s Italian ice in the mall! They have Swedish Fish Italian ice, it is amazing! Click here! for more information of all the events in Salem.
Trick or Treating / Costumes! The university offers “Safe Zone Trick or Treating” in Sheehy and Concordia. You can stand outside your room and hand out candy or participate in the haunted house in the Concordia basement. Keep your eyes peeled on all the school bulletin boards for more information.
Foliage! Pack a picnic and take a ride up to New Hampshire or anywhere through Massachusetts and take a good look at the changing colors of leaves. Pretty soon those leaves will be gone and we’ll be waiting for snow (hopefully not too soon)!
Beginning Hockey Games! The first hockey game of the season is October 3 at 3 p.m. versus New Brunswick at the Tsongas Center! It’ll be a good time for all! Check out our athletic site for the complete hockey schedule here!
I hope this inspires a lot of you to get out there and do something (when you aren’t busy with homework)!
Tell us if you’ve gone to any of these places or plan on it!

Living Under One Roof
Hello everyone! I hope you are enjoying this fantastically beautiful Tuesday…day! It has been the first few weeks of school and this blog is for all of you who are living on campus and have a room mate… or 2… or 3! I’m sure that some of you by now are ready to rip out your hair because your room mate(s) are driving you up a wall and you want to get as far away from them as possible. Just take a few steps back a a few deep breaths and TALK to your room mate. Communication is a big part of any kind of friendship or rather in this case: ROOMMATESHIP. (Brand new word for all of you, feel free to use it in everyday conversation). Get to know you’re room mate in case you haven’t already.. You might find that you have a lot more in common than you thought and best yet, if you talk it out, your room mate will be more aware of what they are doing to drive you absolutely insane (and bald), and will stop doing the annoying act that is making Rogaine’s stock go through the roof!

Flash Back
HELLLLOOOOOO PEEPS!!!
Ever had a flash back moment, ever wonder what it was like 20 years ago? I do all the time, I look back on my childhood all the time:

A lot of the times items from our childhood are left behind thrown away. After the knocking down of Smith hall for the future Emerging technology and Innovation Center, at the corner of the building was a box….. The box was from 1947!!!!! It was light indicating that it was mostly letters in the box, BUT still that’s wicked awesome. In honor of this cool finding, the school is making another time capsule that will be buried in the same spot. Starting in the spring 2011 they will be taking different types of items. So ask yourself if this was found in 20 years what would you want the future to know about the past??????

Hello Thursday!!
My Turn!
Hi everyone!! My name is James Ham and I am a junior music education major here at Umass Lowell. I was also an orientation leader over the summer and I got the chance to meet some of you freshman or transfers who might be reading this. So due to my major, it is very easy to tell what I enjoy doing. I absolutely LOVE music. To me, music feeds the soul, and I can’t imagine not having music being a daily part of my life. I am very involved when it comes to music at this university. I created the one and only acapella group here at Umass Lowell and I named it “Hawkapella”. Acapella music is in fact my favorite genre of music… I loved how the sky was the limit when it comes to arranging a song to be sung by nothing but your vocal chords. Although I do enjoy singing (pretty much all the time… and I annoy anyone who is around me at the time… terribly sorry for that) the instrument I am best at is actually the trumpet. I picked it up in third grade and I haven’t stopped since then!
Well that is enough about me, how about you who are reading this currently? I would love to hear your stories and what drives you to do what you love to do! Please send the ambassadors a message on facebook, or maybe give us a “Tweet”. We are always here to answer your questions, or even if you just want to talk to someone!
Ill also give you a little tip before I go on my way:
As you all have noticed, we just had our official first full week of school, and the homework is starting to pile up and the quizzes and tests and projects are starting to be announced and you’re all staying up late to try and get everything done. It gets a little challenging to get up in the morning when you have been running on only 4-5 hours of sleep for a few nights in a row, so here are some tips that will get you up and on time for your class!
1) Set multiple alarms…. because we are all guilty of just shutting off our alarm without even waking up to begin with. If you set more than one alarm, you will have to wake up to at least one of them… I have set 8 alarms before (but I am extra careful.. and extra sleepy)
2) Put your alarm clock out of arms reach… This way you will actually have to GET OUT of bed to shut off the annoying ringing that disturbed your perfect dream. And this will motivate you to get ready for your day, because you are already out of your bed and you might as well get your day started!
3) GET A DECENT NIGHTS SLEEP. Trust me, I know we are all guilty of pulling all-nighters, or not getting as much sleep as we should, but you should REALLY take the time to get a proper 8-10 hours of sleep if not every night, then MOST nights… and if you cant always get the 8-10 hours of rest, try taking a 30 minute nap when you have a break to recharge.
Well, that’s it for my tips and such. I hope that you all have a great semester and that you will always be on time for your 8am class that you are probably dreading getting up for tomorrow! π
Goodnight,
James
Hey!
Hey everyone! I hope your semester is amazing so far. My name is Meg, I am one of the lovely Orientation Ambassadors/Leaders for this year. You might remember me as being from being the ‘slut’ in the Orientation skit this summer, but my character is nothing like myself. I am a sophomore Nursing major and although, my classes are hard I love every moment of it. I’ve known since I was in a freshman in high school that I wanted to be in the health field. I love helping others and it is one of the main reasons the I am a Nursing major.
When I am not in the library studying Anatomy, Microbiology, and Physiological Chemistry, I am cheering. I am one of the UMass Lowell Cheerleading Captains. It is so much fun, I was not much of a cheerleader when I came to college (I only had cheered for 2 years because I danced for over 14 hours a week for most of my life) but I am so happy I got involved. The girls and guys on the team are amazing. We have so much fun at practice and at the games. And it’s great to know they always have my back.
After all of that, I have only have a little time to spare which is the time I dedicate to you! I want to make sure you enjoy UMass Lowell as much as I do. UMass Lowell was not my first choice school, but I am so happy I came here. The campus is exciting and always improving and the people are amazing! I really hope all of you take all the opportunities to get involved, it will help you meet a lot of people who have similar interests as you. And I hope you listen to us when we say: ask us anything! We have heard all the crazy questions,so don’t think you are stupid or weird for not knowing something. And plus we want to help you, so don’t be shy and ask us all your question.
Have a great semester!!
-Meg (:
Hey Guys!
I hope everyone’s time here so far has been great! We’re really excited to have you all join our community!
My names Cait White and I’m a 19 (soon to be 20) year old sophomore here and UMass Lowell! I’m here for a Biology major and a psychology minor. I chose UMass Lowell because it was the perfect distance from home, I loved the atmosphere of the school and it worked out best financially. I have no regrets in my decision and I’m am so excited about all of the new people I have met. All of my current best friends are people that I have either met in class or that I worked with over the summer as an Orientation Leader (I hope some of you remember me! (I was the anorexic in the play…haha))
Here on campus there are a lot of activities that I love doing. I recently rejoined the BioClub, which I love because we plan fun trips and do fundraisers that help people and the environment, which is something that is important to me! I was also on the women’s rugby team up until recently. Due to a hectic schedule I had to put it off until the spring, hopefully! Rugby is such a fun sport and for any girls that are reading this right now, you should all go and join! I’m not a big girl and I’m still standing! π Sometimes I like to go to the gym and work out. Last year I did yoga and I LOVED it, but I can’t make it to the classes this year because they conflict with my schedule. I clearly need to set up my classes better next year!
Well now that you guys know about me, I want to know more about you! How is your semester going? I hope you guys use all of us as a resource to answer any questions that you may have! That’s why we are here!
Just as a little tip, make sure you make time for yourself! That is so important. My first semester I was swamped with classes and work and I was just constantly doing schoolwork. I ate really crappy food, barely slept and was sick all the time. The next semesters I made time for myself, joined rugby, and got a job and my health & grades improved! So please, don’t be a stranger! You can ask any one of us questions or come to us if you need help with anything! Hope you have a great rest of the semester!
Ciao!
-Cait π
