What up?!?!,


Jeff here for your weekly dose of “what’s up with Jeff”.  Well…I’ll tell ya!  I have been pretty busy with exams and what not.  It seems like they never endddddddddddd….see what I did there?!  Anyway, that’s pretty much my life right now so nothing too exciting but on the subject of exams, make sure ya’ll are keepin’ up with your work and maintaining your grades.


Cut the serious stuff you say?!?!  Alright fine…


Keep your eyes peeled for flyers in your department buildings and your e-mails to see when your advising starts.  It’s coming up quick so get on it!

Tonight, in the Fox Hall Common, there is a Red Sox Nation event going on put on by Student Activities and Leadership.    It starts at 7PM and there will be free hot dogs and soda, so go and watch the game…unless your studying obviously then that would be counter-productive now wouldn’t it?








The MEISA/VPAC music series is going on and Thursday night at 8PM there will be a concert in the Fox Hall Common.  It will be featuring some campus bands as well as some other Boston based bands so go and enjoy some good music!!




And my weekly Movies That Rocks plug?  Here it is…


This weekend, starting Friday night at 7PM, The Blindside will be premiered in O’Leary Library at 8PM.  On Sunday it will be in Fox Hall Common and Monday at the ICC all at 7PM!  Be sure to check it out and relax after a harsh week of studying and chaos.


One more thing about different events…Friday, April 16th UML LOL is presenting Myq Kaplan, a stand up comedian who has done shows on Comedy Central and was announced in 2008 as the comedian of the year.  So come and check him out at the Fox Hall Common at 9PM for a good laugh!

Spring was here, for about a day, but it’s planning on coming back again so don’t let this one gloomy day get you down. There are so many wonderful things to be doing around campus right now that it would be crazy to just stay inside. In fact, in today’s blog entry, i’m going to talk about one thing in particular. 
Walking tours of Lowell!
If you’ve been pushing aside your urgent need to take a look at the city around us because of the bad weather, now might be the most opportune time to do it. The sun is shining (Well, not right now) and the birds are chirping. Why not come on over to South campus and go walk along the Merrimack river? Bring a blanket and some food and make a picnic. And if the city is where you want to be, take a bus from any of the campuses over to the ICC and start trekking.
You can go to lunch in places like the Mambo Grill, Dharma Buns, or Mr. Jalapenos. Take some pictures of interesting things that float your boat or even set up a sort of scavenger hunt with a group of friends. Or if that doesn’t interest you, just go around and check out some of the local establishments. Found, a really awesome thrift store in the downtown area, is always good for the laughs and entertainment. You can always “find” something there that will interest you.
And if you need more ideas on things to do in the Lowell area, just ask a friend who has been there before or your Resident Advisor.

I received an email earlier today that (hopefully!) you all received as well- it concerns advising, which is a very important matter here at UML!
One of the faculty members at the English department sent me this email stating


“Just to clarify… the Advising Period this semester has been delayed from what was originally published in the schedule book.  Advising will now take place from April 14th through the 28th.  Advisors will post available times on their office doors, so you can sign up for an appointment.”

This means that you must mark your calenders and planners accordingly!

Visiting your academic advisor (or some one in your department) is crucial to keeping your courses on track. Many new students sign up for courses simply based on their names or easiness, which is fine if they fit into your specific curriculum, but be sure to stay on track. While many majors have room for free electives- classes not necessarily required to take that fulfill credits- you must, must, must take required classes. Your advisors can help you plan out all your future semesters to ensure that you are staying on track. 


In addition, advisors can also help you obtain internships or jobs related to your field, offer general advice about your major, and answer general questions about UML. 


Many colleges try to enforce advising for numerous reasons. Here are a few more:

• To address any problems which affect your academic performance.
• To select courses and to obtain clearance for registration for the upcoming
  semester during Advising Week .

• To add or drop a course, change a grade option, obtain authorization to
  study at another institution.
• To discuss academic progress, seek approval for a degree modification,
  request an incomplete grade.
• To explore academic and/or professional issues, to change your major,
  minor or concentration.
• To submit an application for your degree
  
  
  You can find our who your advisor through your ISIS account, or by visiting your department’s main office.
  
  
  To sum up, go see your advisor this year April 14th through the 28 !!!!

Want another way to get between campuses WITHOUT having to wait for the bus?!

Then, you MUST check out the program Rec-Cycles that is offered thru the Rec Center. Rec-Cycles is a free bicycle lending program. To check out a bike, visit the CRC Welcome Desk, fill out a waiver form and a risk and liability form and you will be able to check the bike out for the day and must be returned by the end of facility operating hours, which is usually by 10pm. You must be a full time student/faculty member with a valid UML ID.

I just wanted to take a moment and write out this blog to commend our EMS services here on campus. If you haven’t heard, they recently recieved their fourth consecutive award from the National Collegiate EMS Foundation; they have been awarded for their outstanding dedication, commitment to the university and their students, and for creating an outstanding program for the benefit of you, the UMass Lowell students. It takes a lot of talent and dedication to recieve the award four years in a row!

The EMS team offers their services 24/7 while school is in session. They are on site for school sports events, and are available for all 911 calls [might I remind you that our university has a two minute response time for police and emergency services?]

It has been a long road, but this student run service has used their skills as a team in order to provide the best service for you, the student. They definately deserve a thank you for all that they provide for us [even if you never end up using their services].

April Showers bring May Flowers… and lots of fun things at UML!!!

Hello all and happy April Fool’s day! I hope you all celebrate it with a good prank on your friends or family. Remember, you’re never too old. 🙂 As some of my fellow bloggers have said, this dreary weather is on its way out and sunshine is on its way in! So let’s wave goodbye to the rain for a little bit and bring in the beautiful weather! 
This weekend is going to be fantastic, bringing ample opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. Maybe you could go downtown and enjoy a cup of coffee while breathing in the fresh air, or you can go to the rec center and borrow a rec-cycle for a pleasant ride along the mighty Merrimack River. 
The first week of April has a lot of exciting things planned for your entertainment. On Tuesday April 6, the Fox Common is hosting RED SOX NATION! Red Sox  vs. Yankees. There will be FREE hot dogs and soda to anyone who goes!!! That sounds like a good deal to me. It’ll be as if you’re at Fenway with all the excitement of opening day.
If anyone is looking for last minute Thursday night plans check out the show that is playing at the Fox Common tonight. It features the talent of Makeout Party, Coalmine Canary and others and starts at 8pm.

I hope you’re all having fun tucked under your hoods, raincoats, and umbrellas! Seriously, is it ever gonna stop raining?! I’m sooooo sick of this crappy weather!! I need SUNSHINE!!!! It’s Spring, isn’t it?!  TOMORROW should be nice and sunny, high of 63!! Friday & Saturday have high’s of 63 and a high of 70! Thank you for the sun, Mother Nature!! Well, that’s my little weather rant…

So March has eluded us once again. I feel like March is the month that doesn’t exist. You come into March worried about midterms, and you have so much work to do that you don’t realize it’s almost Spring Break. For one blissful week, you sit back and don’t worry about school work. Then BAM! It’s April! Where’d you come from, April!?!

Since March has seemed to sneak by us all once again, you might have a few questions bobbling around in that smart little noggin of yours.
