Peaceful Protests at UML

Hello world,
Ashley in da house. Usually, my blogs are pretty light and fluffy. This blog will be a bit heavier, so read carefully and please respond with an e-mail at Ashley_Tello@student.uml.edu if you have anything you’d like to ask or say!

The Off Broadway Players, our amazing theater group on campus, is putting on “The Laramie Project.” “The Laramie Project” is the story of gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard who was brutally beaten on October 6, 1998 in Laramie, Wyoming and died six days later as a result of his injuries. The Tectonic Theater Project visited the town of Laramie one month later and returned several times over the next year to conduct interviews with the people of Laramie and those related to the story.

The Off-Broadway Players perform in the Comley-Lane Theater, located in Mahoney Hall, on UMass Lowell’s South Campus (870 Broadway Street, Lowell, MA).

I know, you’re all thinking…what? This isn’t too much to talk about, Ash. Well, actually, there’s more.

If any of you are familiar with the Westboro Baptist Church, WBC, then you may know where this blog is leading.

The WBC is a group of people who picket certain events with hateful picketing and protest. They are scheduled to come to UMass Lowell on October 24, 1:15 – 2pm outside of Mahoney Hall to protest OBP, Pride Alliance, and Gender Studies performance of “The Laramie Project.”

PLEASE:::: DO NOT plan any sort of counter protest!! A student on campus has come up with a very PEACEFUL way to voice their opinions of the protest.

They encourage a silent, peaceful protest were anyone who is interested should wear purple  to support both Matthew and our Off Broadway Players.

For anymore information regarding this issue please refer to the Facebook event “Wear Purple for The Laramie Project.”

So, if you’d like your “voice to be heard” simply PEACEFULLY & SILENTLY attend ‘Wear Purple for The Laramie Project.’

If you cannot be there physically, wear purple wherever you are and send kind words and thoughts to the production of this show.

Remember, if you have any questions, comments, or something to add, feel free to email me!
