Riding High on Horseback

Sunday morning dawned beautiful here in Monteverde with a bit of mist coming down from the mountain  In the early morning sunshine, it looked almost magical as it drifted past the lodge.  We had breakfast then headed out for the stable. There we mounted the horses and rode off with our guides, one in the front and one in the rear. The trails were a bit treacherous and horses were working hard to keep pace with one another while managing their riders. Once at the top we dismounted and took in the view while enduring fierce winds sustained at 60+ mph.  The sites were beautiful and looking to the west, we could see the Pacific Ocean in the haze of midday heat.

Our ride ended with a tour of the farm and an egg and tortilla snack handmade by our host, fresh fruit.

Horseback riding

Today was awesome! We arrived in Monteverde yesterday and I thought it wouldn’t be as fun because it is in the middle of nowhere, but turns out it’s very fun! We went to see the rainforest and then the hummingbird garden all in one day. We saw so many beautiful plants and scenery. I was fortunate enough to get a video of a toucan raiding through nests for an easy meal. We were also very lucky to see a quetzal, which is a rare bird that most people don’t get to see. Our guide hadn’t seen him in four days and he goes into the forest almost everyday for tours. We saw fungus, moss, beetles, flowers, and even a waterfall. After the rainforest adventure we visited another site with reptiles, insects, and a butterfly farm.
I was very pleased with the photos I was able to take as well. I experimented with color contrast on my Sony, and my Iphone took some memorable pictures too.

Happening Times in Monteverde

Hello world we’ve landed in Monteverde, St. Elena Costa Rica.  The drive up was the most treacherous I’ve ever been on, but we joked, teased and supported each other along the way.  Snapping pictures occupied our time when we discovered the road was closed and the alternative was muddy.  The driver got us through ok and we arrived in one piece.

We quickly settled and did what most people do, we went to check out the shopping and dining.  Both are more than adequate with many souvenir shops and funky places to eat.  The rain soon started and like San Jose, it rained like I’ve never seen, but only for a short time.  We headed to The Tree House for dinner – a very unusual restaurant that’s build around a tree, we had dinner then listened to live music.  We’re all had a great time.

This area of the world is so beautiful, I never know I could touch the sky, smell clouds, and be one with both.

Our ascent into the mountains.

Today we ventured into the mountains of Costa Rica to Monteverde. About two thirds of the way there were paved roads, but the last third was nothing but dirt and rocks. After a long, bumpy, twisted ride, we arrived at our hotel. The staff welcomed us with fresh lemonade (which was delicioso) before we each did our own things (most of us walked into the center of the town and poked around in various souvenir shops).
We're so high we can practically reach out and touch the clouds.

We all went to dinner at the Treehouse Restaurante & Cafe where we enjoyed listening to live music (including “Wonderwall,” “Black Magic Woman,” and “Gravity,” among others). As the name suggests, the restaurant is located in the middle of a tree, so it was pretty cool to say the least. Some of us were having too much fun to leave; others were getting tired after a long day of traveling, so those who were tired (myself included) returned to the hotel while the others stayed to enjoy the music and atmosphere a little longer.

The walk back was short and dry, but as I write this it is pouring out, which is expected since it is their rainy season here in Costa Rica. You learn to always have a rain jacket with you, even if the skies are clear. Upon returning to my room, I was greeted by 3 rather large beetles which frightened me. It wouldn’t have been so bad if it were Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, but they weren’t those kinds of Beatles. Luckily one of the men in our group had walked back with us and was staying in the room next door so he chased them away for me (after he had a photo shoot with them first). Then when I was getting ready for bed I saw a daddy long leg spider crawling across the floor. I still had my sneakers on so I gathered up my courage and killed him (after the third attempt). Needless to say I have the heebie jeebies now, so I zipped up all my bags and I’m probably going to stay up until my roommates get back. Close encounters with bugs you don’t like tend to get the adrenaline going and wake you up.

Tomorrow we are scheduled to tour the rainforest and later a butterfly garden and a reptile and amphibian exhibit. I’m looking forward to these events, and I hope I see some animals up close and personal (no bugs though), and take some awesome pictures.

Hello rainforest!

After a bumpy but scenic ride on the Pan American highway and up a mountain, we have arrived at the Monteverde Villa Lodge. There is a much higher concentration of wildlife and fauna here compared to San Jose, as well as more bugs! My stomach has not been taking the food well so recently, so I’ve decided to stick bread and fruit mostly. There are a lot of tourists here, many other college-age students as well, so I’m hearing a lot of English. The room we are staying in is beautiful with wood paneling on all the walls and ceiling. I’m thinking of Sunday to celebrate my birthday with the group and try one of the famous ziplines. I might chicken out so we’ll see how that goes. Have to wake up early tomorrow for our rainforest tour 🙂

Dia número tres en Costa Rica

Un dia mas en Costa Rica, yesterday we had the opportunity to visit a couple of companies. The difference between this two companies was quite striking, the first company was a manufacturing facility owned and operated by a British parent company, while the second company is a cooperative owned by milk producers from Costa Rica. today we are up early having breakfast and getting ready to pack because today we heading to Monte Verde. oops breaks fast is here, time to eat 😉
