For starters, here\u2019s hoping everyone back home had a terrific and safe 4th<\/sup> of July.<\/p>\n

While we may be far away from home this Independence Day, our semester in Paris has started off with a \u201cbang\u201d (sorry, couldn\u2019t resist\u00a0 : )\u00a0\u00a0 )<\/p>\n

Since arriving in Paris, we have become acquainted with one another, acquainted with our \u201chome away from home\u201d, (la fondation des Etats-Unis<\/a>) and now, acquainted with Paris \u2013 our classroom for the semester.<\/p>\n

To start our week off, we took an open bus tour of Paris<\/a> (green line) where we were able to get a bird\u2019s eye view from atop the bus of some of the most popular Paris landmarks, many of which we will be visiting personally and learning about from our professors, Dr. Carole Salmon and Prof. Jennifer Cadero-Gillette.<\/p>\n

On our tour, over 19 landmarks were highlighted, from the Op\u00e9ra, to the Louvre and Mus\u00e9ee d\u2019Orsay, Champs \u00c9lys\u00e9es and many more, but my favorites had to be l\u2019Arc de Triomphe<\/p>\n

and Notre Dame.<\/p>\n

At the completion of the bus tour, Dr. Salmon and Prof. Cadero-Gillette gave a fascinating talk about the history of Notre Dame.\u00a0 We learned a lot about its innovative construction (begun in the 12th<\/sup> century) as well as the stories behind its relief structures.<\/p>\n

Its influence has been far reaching throughout time and continues to leave its mark even today.\u00a0 For example, did you know that Notre Dame, considered the official center of Paris, contains a marker (\u201cKilometer Zero,\u201d) whereby all distances measured from Paris are taken?<\/p>\n

We concluded the day with a walking tour (complete with teaching commentary) through the Latin Quarter and the Sorbonne and completed our tour at the Panth\u00e9on.\u00a0 \u00a0I am excited to see what\u2019s in store for our \u201cclass\u201d tomorrow!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
