{"id":1,"date":"2017-12-14T19:10:48","date_gmt":"2017-12-14T19:10:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uml.edu\/haiti-capstone-2018\/?p=1"},"modified":"2017-12-19T12:42:37","modified_gmt":"2017-12-19T17:42:37","slug":"welcome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uml.edu\/haiti-capstone-2018\/2017\/12\/14\/welcome\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcome!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to the blog for the UMass Lowell\u00a0alternative capstone class for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uml.edu\/Engineering\/Civil-Environmental\/default.aspx\">civil and environmental engineering<\/a> students, taught during the Fall 2017 semester by Linda Barrington, the service learning coordinator for the Francis College of Engineering, and by Prof. Onur Apul next semester.<\/p>\n<p>This trip is the latest effort in Haiti led by the group <em>Engineers for Change<\/em>, a student group that aims to make a difference in the world, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uml.edu\/Innovation-Entrepreneurship\/DifferenceMaker\/Meet-the-DifferenceMakers\/BASH.aspx\">BASH (Biodigestor-Aided Solution in Haiti)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uml.edu\/differencemaker\/2017\/02\/07\/team-bash-goes-to-haiti\/\">previous trip in January, 2017 to\u00a0Project Hope (Pwoje Espwa)<\/a>, an orphanage located in Les Cayes, Haiti, to plan for a biodigester, the students learned that the orphanage needed septic systems.<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;vertical-align: baseline;margin: 0in 0in 19.5pt 0in\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt;font-family: 'Helvetica',sans-serif;color: #373737\">They decided to make designing and installing a septic system f.or one house in the orphanage their capstone project \u2013 and design it in a way that it could be replicated for other residential buildings.
