She recently partnered with the university and local area high schools to offer a &#8220;Women in STEM&#8221; event in our Makerspace&#8230;.<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div>Saturday, the women of the Merrimack Valley Robotics team (FRC 5962) held an event at the University for local female, high school students interested in STEM.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Fourteen girls from four different schools (Tewksbury High School, Lowell High School, Innovations Academy, and Dracut High School) attended. The team also had eight mentors from UMass Lowell, as well as partners Amazon Robotics and Analog Devices to assist with projects.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uml.edu\/engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2016\/05\/Unknown-3.jpeg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-103\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-103 size-thumbnail alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uml.edu\/engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2016\/05\/Unknown-3-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"Unknown-3\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>The team created\u00a0three engineering stations: electrical, software, and mechanical, where the girls\u00a0experienced various\u00a0hands on activities demonstrating some of the things done in each of the fields.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The software team wrote simple programs to get the robot moving around. The electrical team constructed puzzles with switches and LEDs and a little soldering project. The mechanical team designed and prototyped a manipulator to pick up a ball.\u00a0\u00a0During lunch, there was the opportunity for everyone to ask questions about college and engineering.\u00a0I am\u00a0extremely\u00a0grateful for UML&#8217;s SWE (Society for Women Engineers) for\u00a0serving as our <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uml.edu\/engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2016\/05\/Unknown.jpeg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-102\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-102\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uml.edu\/engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2016\/05\/Unknown-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"Unknown\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>mentors,\u00a0as well as providing an overview of SWE and its role in supporting women engineers.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I want to thank Jamie and Sam from Analog Devices and Pratheeba from Amazon Robotics for their support and assistance.\u00a0Thank you to the team as well for supporting this throughout the last month.
