{"id":77,"date":"2016-04-19T13:30:26","date_gmt":"2016-04-19T18:30:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uml.edu\/engineering\/?p=77"},"modified":"2016-04-19T13:32:39","modified_gmt":"2016-04-19T18:32:39","slug":"studentshapeslives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uml.edu\/engineering\/2016\/04\/19\/studentshapeslives\/","title":{"rendered":"Mechanical Engineering junior shaping minds and changing lives in Boston&#8217;s South End"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>Samariah (Sammy) Jacobs,\u00a0a UMass Lowell Mechanical Engineering junior, is doing amazing work getting inner city Boston youth\u00a0creatively engaged in technology and engineering, as a mentor in\u00a0the\u00a014 year old Learn 2 Teach, Teach 2 Learn program at the <strong style=\"font-style: italic\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tech-center-enlightentcity.tv\">South End Technology Center @\u00a0Tent City.<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uml.edu\/engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2016\/04\/BlinkieElectricGroupPhoto.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-80\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-80 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uml.edu\/engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2016\/04\/BlinkieElectricGroupPhoto-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Blinkieelectricl2tt2l\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Sammy, fellow L2T\/T2L college mentors\u00a0and\u00a0youth teachers just won an international <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/edu\/resources\/programs\/google-rise-awards\/#!google-rise-award-recipients\">Google RISE award<\/a><\/strong> for their work and the National Science Foundation is studying their work as national best practices in a Digital Literacies research project. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p><em>Each year, 36 teenage youth teachers, who are selected to represent Boston, learn 6 different technology and engineering modules, build projects that solve community issues, then offer free 3-4 week STEAM camps for 700+ Boston elementary and middle school youth at 25 community organizations who would not otherwise offer STEM enrichment. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uml.edu\/engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2016\/04\/SquishaySoccerSamRafael.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-79\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-79 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uml.edu\/engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2016\/04\/SquishaySoccerSamRafael-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"SquishaySoccerSamRafael\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Sammy was a youth teacher when she was in high school and now is in her second year of working as a college mentor in the program.\u00a0 Last year, Sammy developed a solar energy activity where youth soldered up solar circuits to power the propeller on their own lasercut wood airplane.\u00a0 She just developed two activities and began teaching them to new youth teachers: \u00a0<strong>Teh\u00a0Squish-ay<\/strong> (using conductive dough to teach electricity and circuits with LEDs, motors, tilt switches, photocells) and <strong>Blinkie Paper<\/strong>\u00a0(uses linkages with circuit stickers to create light up cards). \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My sincere appreciation to\u00a0Dr. Susan Klimczak, L2T Director of Special Programs, for calling attention to\u00a0Sammy&#8217;s inspiring community contributions. She is a shining example of just one of the many reasons why I am so proud to be Dean of the College of Engineering.
