{"id":1371,"date":"2019-04-22T14:01:10","date_gmt":"2019-04-22T14:01:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uml.edu\/differencemaker\/?p=1371"},"modified":"2019-04-22T14:01:13","modified_gmt":"2019-04-22T14:01:13","slug":"2019-preliminary-pitch-off","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uml.edu\/differencemaker\/2019\/04\/22\/2019-preliminary-pitch-off\/","title":{"rendered":"2019 Preliminary Pitch-Off"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On Wednesday, April 10, we held our 2019 DifferenceMaker\nPreliminary Pitch-off at O\u2019Leary Library on South Campus.&nbsp; This year 33 student teams got the\nopportunity to pitch their ideas to our panels of guest judges.&nbsp; To end our event, the ten finalist teams were\nannounced and will be competing on April 24<sup>th<\/sup> in our 2019 Idea\nChallenge for a chance to win $50,000!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Congratulations to our ten finalist teams!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Benji Ball- <\/strong>Benjamin\nMcEvoy, Sophomore, Business; Gavin Donohue, Sophomore, Engineering; Tristan\nNaboicheck, Freshman, English; &amp; Edward Monrante, Sophomore, Education.&nbsp; <em>\u201cThis\nis a Baseball training tool that will be composed of a bat and ball with the\nball having multiple sides, each side showing the different outcome of an at\nbat. The bat has a bigger barrel since this game\/training tool is designed for\nchildren and special needs kids to be able to learn the game of baseball in a\nfun and simplistic way. I already have the first prototype made from a\nmanufacturer in China.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ECG for Me (Electro\nCardio Athletic Patch)- <\/strong>Rachel Harrington, Graduate, Biotechnology; Taylor\nMellen, Graduate, Biotechnology; &amp; William Bizilj, Graduate, Biotechnology.&nbsp; <em>\u201cDesign\nwireless electro cardio patches that work with the Apple Series 4 watch to\ndisplay an ECG capable of detecting underlying heart conditions.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>EV Smart (EV 2 EV)-<\/strong>\nOmkar Bhandakkar, Alumni, Energy Engineering; Hamza Ehsan, Junior, Computer\nScience; &amp; Rajvi Shah, Senior, Computer Science.&nbsp; <em>\u201cWe\nwant to solve the problem of EV owners worrying about range and charging. By\ncreating an app to connect nearby EV owners with people in need of charging we\nsolve exactly that. With the hardware in place for Vehicle-2-vehicle\ncommunications as well we can have short range and long range communications\neither between mobile phones and users or cars between cars.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jamfuze (Music Web\nPlatform)- <\/strong>Stephen Wahome, Alumni, MBA; Christopher Sinclair, Junior, BBA;\nMichael Adrien, Senior, Sound Recording Technology (BM).&nbsp; <em>\u201cWe are\naiming to create a music website\/market place connects local artist with the\nservices they need to build and accelerate their music careers. These services\nwill range from finding local studios, engineers, videographers, beats, and\nmuch more. The key is eliminating the search cost for these artists by\nproviding a one stop shop platform.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OTDSEES (Over Terrain\nTactical Scuba Personnel Delivery Device)- <\/strong>Ian Ramsdell, Senior, BA.&nbsp; <em>\u201cAs a\nscuba diver here in New England it is always a challenge to haul your gear over\nthe extremely uneven terrain that is associated with the best dive sites. This\nalso keeps a lot of disabled divers from being able to enjoy a sport that they\nlove. For a disabled scuba diver, this terrain makes it even more of a\nchallenge. I have developed a device that would either assist the diver by\nmoving the diver&#8217;s gear to the water or even move a disabled diver to the water\nor even into the water.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Projected Pin\/ ATM\nFast App- <\/strong>Conrad Nelson, Junior, Chemical Engineering; Jenna Olander,\nSenior, Art (BFA); Tatiana Tompkin, Sophomore, Business; &amp; Mohammad\nMusawear, Freshman, Computer Engineering.&nbsp;\n<em>\u201cA faster and safer method to\nwithdraw from an ATM that will save Americans and ATM companies millions of\ndollars per year.&nbsp; Our method requires a\nminor integration to the ATM user interface that will help prevent potentially\nall card skimming and PIN theft that occurs at ATMs.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RE-VIVE (NextStep)- <\/strong>Nicholas\nLydon, Senior, Chemical Engineering (BSE); Allison Michell, Senior, Chemical\nEngineering (BSE); &amp; Derek Jamieson, Freshman, Undeclared.&nbsp; <em>\u201cThis\nproject aims to address the opioid epidemic by preventing fatal overdose. The\nproject consists of a wearable auto-injection system to administer Naloxone to\nthose suffering from a drug overdose. This will help decrease the number of\nfatal overdoses that tragically occur, and hopefully combat the overall\nepidemic.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The CAT Mat (Outside\nIn \u2013 An outdoor simulation mat)- <\/strong>Michelle Mailloux, Graduate, Physical\nTherapy; &amp; Katherine Muise, Graduate, Physical Therapy.&nbsp; <em>\u201cOur\nproduct is a mat that will allow physical therapists to treat their patients\u2019\ndeficits throughout the body, from the musculoskeletal system to sensory\nsystems. It will simulate walking outdoors to help patients prepare for\ncommunity ambulation. Our mat will have a sturdy structure underneath that\nallows it to be slip-free and be buildable. The pieces will be sized so that\nthey can fit in parallel bars, making them usable to even the most dependent of\npatients. It will be a great alternative to walking outside when an outdoor\nenvironment is not suitable for a patient.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>USe Cart-<\/strong> Max\nUshakov, Graduate, Electrical Engineering; Daniel Falcone, Senior, Business; Moya\nAlhayek, Junior, Electrical Engineering; &amp; Shanice Kelly, Junior,\nMechanical Engineering.&nbsp; <em>\u201cThe future shopping cart that makes the\nshopping faster, easier for customers, pushing the self-checking to the new\nlevel. The smart shopping cart will create the better experience of doing your\ngrocery, and it will reduce the time that you spend in a store.
