{"id":161,"date":"2015-11-18T16:54:15","date_gmt":"2015-11-18T21:54:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uml.edu\/antarctica-2015\/?p=161"},"modified":"2015-11-18T16:54:15","modified_gmt":"2015-11-18T21:54:15","slug":"so-much-wiser","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uml.edu\/antarctica-2015\/2015\/11\/18\/so-much-wiser\/","title":{"rendered":"So much wiser"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Important things I\u2019ve learned in the past month (caution\u2014many references to urine follow):<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Active helicopter rotors are terrifying, and one should abandon all shame and just duck the whole time you\u2019re near them.<\/li>\n<li>If one is, for instance, in theory, pouring one\u2019s pee bottle into a container in high winds, one would do best to stand upwind from said pour.<\/li>\n<li>Rotating between boots every two or three days lets you mix up blister locations.<\/li>\n<li>Canned fruit is much better than no fruit.<\/li>\n<li>A pee bottle with a frozen-on lid can be easily unstuck with two good whacks on a rock.<\/li>\n<li>If you do not wear head covering while near a landing 212 Helo, your hair will be irrevocably swimming in fine sand.<\/li>\n<li>Unlike in normal life, a change of pants is more necessary than a change of shirt, because apparently my armpits emit no odor in the cold?<\/li>\n<li>Helo pilots and technicians are surprisingly not arrogant despite their awesome jobs, n = 6 or so.<\/li>\n<li>Never go outside in a windstorm without goggles.<\/li>\n<li>Never allow a full pee bottle to freeze. If a half-full pee bottle freezes, it takes approximately four re-uses to remove the frozen material.<\/li>\n<li>You didn\u2019t actually lose the thing you\u2019re looking for, it\u2019s merely in one of Big Red\u2019s many many pockets.<\/li>\n<li>Any gift in the field, even something so seemingly small as a cluster of apples from Rosalind at Crary IT, is the best and most gratefully received gift you\u2019ve ever gotten.<\/li>\n<li>After a week with your camp using pee bottles, just assume that everything is covered in urine and then get over it. It\u2019s sterile, right?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Ok, that\u2019s enough of that.
