Don\u2019t even get me started on organic produce. Until fairly recently, I didn\u2019t understand what made it better, and I didn\u2019t really want to understand&#8230; But since society is demanding more locally sourced, organic options, I thought I&#8217;d learn more about organic vegetables. Apparently, it\u2019s good for your body to *not* eat things genetically modified and coated in pesticides. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyway, it\u2019s a pretty health-focused community here at UML.\nNot counting all the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uml.edu\/Wellness-Wall\/#section_Physical\">healthy activities\navailable to students<\/a>, the people I work with directly do healthy eating\nchallenges, and University Crossing has a stair climbing challenge. This sounds\nterrible if you know anything about the stairs in UC. But it\u2019s good cardio, so\nthere\u2019s that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/WaDMoSyG7i87e\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Because of peer pressure (the good kind, I guess), I compiled\ndata for a month and made a pie chart so I could analyze the types of food I\neat daily. I figured that knowledge would be the first step to bettering myself\nand improving my diet. Asking for a friend.<br><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This all changed two weeks ago when I met with the Director of Sustainability, Ruairi O\u2019Mahony, so I could catch up\nto the sustainability conversation that many college campuses across the\ncountry are having. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He brought me up to speed on ways that\nUML has embraced sustainability and going green that I never would have\nrealized or noticed. You may not notice if you visit campus, either. Our green\ninitiatives are hidden in plain sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s the connection between our sustainability efforts and healthy eating? O\u2019Mahony\nput it well when he said the university\u2019s sustainability efforts were\n\u201cpartnership-focused with the city, campus community and students, and everyone\nis always working to move the city forward.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rooftop garden is just one example of all groups coming together, and it took a lot of work from people across the campus community and city to make it happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The university\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uml.edu\/sustainability\/Engagement\/urban-agriculture\/\">Urban Agriculture Program<\/a>, Mill City Grows (a Lowell-based urban food access non-profit), UML\u2019s student government association and the campus community came together to establish the new rooftop garden at University Crossing this past spring. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uml.edu\/admissions\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/142\/2019\/05\/organic-vegetables-rooftop-garden-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"organic vegetables rooftop garden UMass Lowell\" class=\"wp-image-396\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.uml.edu\/admissions\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/142\/2019\/05\/organic-vegetables-rooftop-garden-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.uml.edu\/admissions\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/142\/2019\/05\/organic-vegetables-rooftop-garden-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.uml.edu\/admissions\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/142\/2019\/05\/organic-vegetables-rooftop-garden-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.uml.edu\/admissions\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/142\/2019\/05\/organic-vegetables-rooftop-garden-400x300.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/blogs.uml.edu\/admissions\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/142\/2019\/05\/organic-vegetables-rooftop-garden.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The plants you see were grown from seedlings in the 1,800-square-foot urban agriculture greenhouse and urban farm on the university\u2019s East Campus. Then, we transferred them  to milk crates filled with compost that originated from the campus\u2019 dining hall.
