But sometimes the advice that \u201cyou should be more positive\u201d doesn\u2019t help when you\u2019re already stuck in your head and feeling alone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These feelings are what graphic design students, Sundilynn, Cathy, Ivanna, Alecia and Emily, tackled this spring semester in an interactive art piece. Their mission? Shining a light on students\u2019 emotional health. They wanted their classmates to know that they didn\u2019t have to fake being happy because they weren\u2019t the only ones with negative feelings, and that they wouldn\u2019t (and shouldn\u2019t) be alone in working through them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Supportive and\npositive thinking is the heart of UML\u2019s culture<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It all started with an assignment for the class, Form and Content (ARTS.2010) with Prof. Jennifer Houle. Sundilynn, Cathy, Ivanna, Alecia and Emily then carved\nwords into the plexiglass brain. This project did more than tell\nstudents to \u201cstay positive.\u201d It reminded them that they weren\u2019t alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>And inspired students to be kind to themselves<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"720\" height=\"960\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uml.edu\/admissions\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/142\/2019\/05\/thinking-happy-thoughts-around-campus.jpg\" alt=\"You have a purpose! It helps to know that there will always be people in your corner who will be kind to you when you can\u2019t be kind to yourself. This art piece is just the tip of the\niceberg of the positive thinking mindset that we have. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The funny thing is that we (the marketing office) didn\u2019t\neven know that this interactive art piece existed. It was pure coincidence that\nwe found out about it. Obviously, some professors and students knew about it,\nbut the students behind this didn\u2019t do it for the glory or bragging rights.\nThey didn\u2019t shout it from the rooftops or make an announcement in the \u201cToday @\nUMass Lowell\u201d email that goes around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Honestly, it\u2019s the willingness to do things like this, supporting their classmates and encouraging positive thinking, that sets UML students apart from the rest. <\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s truth (and science!) behind people saying that positive thinking makes you feel better when you\u2019re stressed out or in a slump.
